The Liner Shipping Game (TM)

The Liner Shipping GameTM is a business simulation that allows a team of ideally 8-16 participants the unique opportunity to simulate and experience how a modern container container shipping line or supply chain using vessels and containers made out of LEGOTM* combined with a paper-based flow of documentation in a small scale setup
in less than one day.

During the game, the team will take responsibility for core commercial and operational tasks of a container shipping line or supply chain, including optionally vital terminal and vessel stowage tasks, and through teamwork they can maximize carrier profitability and sustainability which they are measured on. Each player gets to try different roles in the shipping line or supply chain by rotating and collaborate closely with other team members. The game can be configured to match industry experience and interests of the team, and shorter or longer sessions can be arranged by simply reducing / adding number of rounds to be played or by reducing / adding features and complexity to the game setup. A game day is finished with a wrap up of key game learnings and a discussion of how they can be applied in today’s competitive liner shipping industry.

The game is run by experienced facilitators with industry expertise and is valuable on its own. However, can also be recommended to combine a game session with additional shorter or longer lectures on liner and port operations, pricing and revenue management, vessel stowage, process improvement, performance management, digitalization, sustainability, strategies, industry dynamics and competitive advantage in the liner shipping industry.

The Value

The game provides participants with a realistic insight into the real world commercial and operational complexities of Liner Shipping. An educational session provides the following value:

·      Hands-on experience with forwarder, customer service, booking uptake, vessel stowage, port operations and asset utilization tasks and their interplay

·      An understanding of the value of communication and collaboration across organizational entities, functions and geographical units in a transportation supply chain and shipping network

·      An understanding of the value of process standards and data discipline for decision making quality

·      An understanding of how IT and AI based decision support tools can enable commercial and operational optimization, maximize asset utilization and improve profitability, i.e. to increase revenue and reduce costs) – as well as sustainability, i.e. reduce fuel consumption and emission reductions, across the supply chain and liner network

The sessions can be tailored to meet competence development and team building needs of executives, middle managers and staff within and across or within organizations and units.

The Benefit of Simulation based Training

The game facilitates and active and not passive learning experience with high knowledge and skill retention rates

"Great insight! The game provides great insight in the complexity of liner shipping companies, both operational as well as commercial. In the various roles of the virtual liner shipping company you really get a feeling for the complexity each role is dealing with. Collaboration becomes vital! Given the monetary aspects is also fun to do since the outcome is a direct result of team effort."

"The Liner Shipping Game gives a great glimpse into some of the core operational and revenue management principles in container shipping. During the game newcomers to the container shipping industry and people working in the logistics sector in general will learn and experience some of what goes on behind the scenes in a container line. It’s great for a team day out of the office building shared knowledge and understanding"

"I learned a lot from playing the liner shipping game and I learned it fast. It helps you understand the complexities of coordinating between countries and ports and between key personnel groups"
